Do you "own" your vehicle? You Purchase a Vehicle from a used car dealer, or an individual owner, or even may have inherited it from a family member, and they give you paperwork. Also known as "signed over the title". Yes, you own your vehicle as in
you bought it. However, the State...any State... does not recognize your authority as the owner of this vehicle until you have filed the title and registration through the DMV.
The process of purchasing a vehicle is not finished until you pay the taxes and officially notify, through tags and title, the state government of your authority over this vehicle.
This is very important in the impound release process as we can only release a vehicle to the owner of record.
If you have all of the paperwork necessary from purchasing the vehicle, please take it down to your local Motor Vehicle Department and finish the process of purchase. We really do want to let you have your car back but you may not fully own your vehicle.
